Over Mother’s Day weekend, the Holly Springs School Of Dance celebrated it’s 15th Anniversary Recital at the Holly Springs Cultural Arts Center. The concerts featured their youngest students ages 3-6, performing in ballet, tap, and creative movement pieces. Additionally, older students shared more advanced work. For many of the 250 students that performed, this was their first recital. Holly Springs School Of Dance will host their Spring Recital in downtown Raleigh at Fletcher Opera House on May 31 and June 2 for dancers ages 7 and up.

HGES crowns spelling bee champ
Contributed On Thursday, Jan. 17, Katelyn Sheets was the winner of the first spelling bee for the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee held at Holly Grove Elementary School in Holly Springs. She is pictured with Mr. DeSiato, HGES’ Academically Gifted teacher, who served as the bee’s proctor. Holly Grove Elementary had 11 school-wide finalists and they went six rounds before an elimination. Katelyn will go on to Wake County’s county-wide spelling bee, and then the winner of that will go to Washington, D.C. for the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

A tribute for Sandy Hook
Holly Springs resident, Michelle McElroy, created a luminary tribute to the 26 victims in Newtown, Conn. As an artist, and a childhood friend of 6-year-old Benjamin Wheeler’s mother, McElroy felt the need to use her skills to create a lighted art installation in the shape of a heart on her front lawn. Since it was installed on Christmas Eve, hundreds of cars have driven by the display. Her mission was for people to remember the victims and their families during the holidays and start of the New Year.
